The Landry News

In the beginning of "The Landry News", we meet Cara Landry. She is re-organizing some  pieces of paper but we don't know anything about the papers.  We also learn that her parents are divorced.  Cara's mom got custody of Cara.  Cara gets the world's worst teacher, Mr.Larson.  One Day, Cara puts up a paper on a cluttered bulletin board on the back wall of Mr. Larson's classroom.  Everyone wants to see what it is, including Mr.Larson. It turns out to be the first copy of "The Landry News"! Cara has a lot of informational facts in this newspaper. But what REALLY angers Mr.Larson is that Cara wrote about him and about how much learning is happening in the classroom: Almost None.  In anger, Mr. Larson rips up the newspaper and YELLS AND YELLS at Cara.  After school ends and Cara is the last one on the bus, she sees Mr Larson and glares at him and he glares back at Cara.  Thank Goodness, Mr Larson didn't go back to the classroom and see that all the pieces of the ripped up newspaper are gone from the waste bin.   The pieces of paper that Cara was organizing at the beginning of the book were actually the ripped up pieces of the Landry News.   After reading Cara's article, Mr Larson feels guilty that he hasn't been teaching the class.  Mr Larson asks Cara what is her favorite part of a newspaper.  Cara replies the whole thing but I love the editorials the most.  Mr Larson teaches them about newspapers and editorials.   Mr Larson asks Cara if there can be more workers for her newspaper.  The whole class then works on the newspaper.  They decide to get stories from other kids in the school.  One day, Michael Mortan comes and hands Cara a story called Lost and Found.  It turns out to be a story about divorce.  Cara could connect to the boy in the story.  She figures out that Michael wrote the story about himself.  When she publishes the story in the paper, Dr Barnes thinks that it is inappropriate content for children and tries to fire Mr Larson for letting the kids put the story in the newspaper.  Cara asks Michael if he can read the story out in front of the judge to prove that he wanted the story published in the newspaper.  Mr Larson ends up not getting fired and everyone is happy for the rest of the year but Cara had to print out a new newspaper because the Landry News was banned from the school.  The new newspaper is called The Guardian.  They hand it out at bus stops because they are not allowed to hand it out at school.  Dr Barnes banned all newspapers from the school.  The Guardian is still being printed out but Dr Barnes doesn't want to see it on school property.

Math Message 4.3

0.3 or 0.15? Witch is bigger?
0.3 Is bigger because it is Tenths and not hunderths like 0.15.
Tenths is bigger than Hundredths because Tenths is a long stick and a Hundredths are little cubes.

What am I thankful for?

I am thankful for my Mom. She is always there for me and my siblings and my dad. She doesn't work but she is always coming for our sports games. She always picks up my dad from work too. That is why I am thankful for my Mom!
